Forestry Registration

TxDMV issues forestry vehicle registration for vehicles used exclusively to transport forest products in their natural state, including:

  • Logs, debarked logs, untreated ties, stave bolts, plywood billets
  • Wood chips, stumps, sawdust, moss, bark, wood shavings
  • Property used in the production of these products

Registration Period

  • The forestry registration year runs from April 1 through March 31 of the following year.
  • Fees are prorated if registration is issued for less than 12 months.

Renewal

  • Forestry license plates must be renewed annually.
  • Renewal forms are mailed to registrants before the March 31 expiration date.

How to Apply

  1. Visit TxFLEET.TxDMV.gov
  2. Click on "Apply for Motor Carrier Account"
  3. Submit the following with your application:
    • Proof of financial responsibility or liability insurance from an insurer authorized in Texas
    • Texas title in the applicant’s name (if leased, include a copy of the lease agreement)

Fees and Payment Information

The registration fee is based on the gross vehicle weight, plus applicable local county fees, cab card and plate fees.

Note on Vehicle Weight and Fees

The gross vehicle weight is calculated by adding:

  • The empty weight of the vehicle, and
  • The heaviest load (carrying capacity) the vehicle will carry during the registration year.

Payment Options

Fees are payable online using:

  • Electronic check (ACH)
  • Credit card (service charge of $0.25 plus 2.25% applies)

More Information

  • If your vehicle has a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, federal law requires proof of payment of the Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) at the time of registration. See the application form for acceptable proof documents.
