Registration and Title Bulletin - #027-07

Date: August 13, 2007

To: All County Tax Assessor-Collectors

Subject: New Motor Vehicle Dealer General Distinguishing Number (GDN) Formats

These documents contain text of correspondence sent by TxDOT to the county tax assessor-collectors, statutory agents who provide vehicle registration and titling services for citizens in Texas. This information is provided to apprise the general public of issues affecting the state's vehicle titling and registration process.

To provide you with information regarding entering the new 7 and 8 digit GDN's in the Registration and Title System (RTS).

The Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) has adopted new automated GDNs which consist of the letter "P" followed by 6 digits (total of 7 digits). The GDN for trailer dealers will consist of an 8-digit pattern (P plus 6 digits plus X). Currently, RTS allows for the entry of only 6 digits.

When processing title transactions involving Texas motor vehicle dealers, enter the numeric digits only in RTS. The GDNs are unique and omitting the "P" and "X" will continue to allow MVD to identify a specific motor vehicle dealer.

If you have any questions or need any additional information, please contact your local Vehicle Titles and Registration Division Regional Office.

In some cases the Registration and Title Bulletins (RTB) contain attachments. If you require a copy of the original signed RTB and the attachments, please e-mail us and include the RTB number. Repeat requests are subject to charges in accordance with Open Record policies.
