Buying a Used Vehicle

Before You Buy

  • Determine what vehicle is right for you.
  • Calculate how much you can afford.
  • Research the vehicle's fair market value.
  • Read consumer reviews from people who own the same vehicle.
  • Shop around for the best price and service.

During the Transaction

  • Test drive the vehicle.
  • Have it inspected by a mechanic.
  • Compare the mileage on the title with the vehicle's odometer reading.
  • Ask for a vehicle history report and maintenance records.
  • If buying from a dealer, read the Buyers Guide. It must tell you if the vehicle is under warranty or being sold "as-is."
  • Trust your instincts. If you have any doubts about the vehicle or the seller, don't buy.
