Sponsoring a Specialty License Plate
New specialty plate designs may be proposed by the public, the legislature, the specialty plates vendor, non-profit and for-profit organizations. Please refer to our brochure for more details.
Please complete an application and submit it with your plate design. All designs must meet the guidelines set in our template.
Approval process and time frame
Specialty license plate applications are reviewed for completeness and presented on the TxDMV website for a 10-day period of public comment known as eView. The plate design then goes before the TxDMV Board for consideration.
The entire approval process can take two to four months. Delays caused by an incomplete application, a design that doesn't pass state legibility requirements or changes to the TxDMV's Board meeting schedule will extend the time required.
There are no limitations to the number of plate designs that can be approved in a given year and each application is given full consideration.
If your organization’s application is not approved by the TxDMV Board, you may submit a new application to be considered again.
If your application is approved, an $8,000 deposit is required before manufacturing work on the plate begins. The deposit offsets the initial costs to produce, sell and distribute the plate. We will work with your group through the design and manufacturing process.
When 800 plates are sold or renewed, the deposit will be returned to the organization.
If your organization’s plate is authorized through the vendor, My Plates, you may request that proceeds from plate sales be sent to a foundation for the benefit of the non-profit organization that is applying.
If your plate application was submitted through TxDMV, your non-profit organization.may receive proceeds from plate sales at that time that a state agency sponsor agrees to receive the funds for appropriation to the designated purpose.
