About Us
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) is responsible for:
- vehicle registration and titling,
- issuing motor carrier operating authority,
- motor carrier enforcement,
- licensing vehicle dealers, and
- awarding law enforcement agencies grants to reduce auto theft and increase public awareness.
Organizational Structure
The TxDMV is governed by a nine-member board whose members are appointed by the governor to six-year terms. The agency's executive director oversees daily operations.
TxDMV recently unveiled its new organizational structure.
History
Passed during the 81st Session of the Texas Legislature, the agency was created in June 2009 when Governor Rick Perry signed
House Bill 3097 in law. TxDMV became operational on November 1, 2009.
Consumer Protection
TxDMV also provides information when the vehicle you bought turns out to be a lemon or when a moving company improperly handles your
household goods. We'll also help you remove your liability when you sell a vehicle.
Driver Licenses
TxDMV does not issue driver licenses. To obtain a driver license, please contact the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).
Transition Period
TxDMVs responsibilities were transferred from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). And because of this, you will continue to see references to TxDOT, and
the TxDOT logo, on TxDMV information as we move Motor Vehicle, Auto Burglary and Theft Prevention, Vehicle Titles and Registration, and Motor Carrier operations from TxDOT to the new TxDMV.
